A Letter from the Co-Chairmen

Dear Friend of SHARP Literacy,

A young Milwaukee girl — we’ll call her Maia — has been a real surprise.

She was born in one of our city’s poorest neighborhoods. Sadly, her father abandoned the family when Maia was two years old. Her mother had trouble making ends meet after that. It wasn’t easy supporting three small children. Maia, the youngest, often didn’t know which relative’s floor she’d be sleeping on from one night to the next . . . or what, if anything, she’d be fed.

You’d think a child with such a start in life would simply become one of the “lost.” Think again.

Maia was a fairly bright, but average second- and third-grade student. In the fourth grade, however, just last year, everything changed. She was fortunate enough to attend one of the 30 Milwaukee area schools to benefit from the SHARP Literacy program. SHARP uses visual arts and arts history to help students develop strong reading and writing skills. And it works.

Last year, the literacy skills of participating second- through fifth-grade students increased by 40-70%!

Today Maia is an avid reader — she loves Shakespeare — and a gifted young writer. She talks about what she wants to be when she grows up. She believes in herself . . . and her dreams for the future.

It costs $100 per year to give each student the invaluable SHARP reading and writing tools. That’s why we’re asking you to lend your support today with a tax-deductible gift to SHARP Literacy, Inc.

Thank you so much.

P.S. You should see the looks on the faces of Milwaukee students when it hits them, “I can read and write!”

It’s a beautiful thing. Please contribute to SHARP Literacy now!
